A bat walk followed by late night open-air swim is being held in Buckfastleigh tomorrow, June 29.

Bat spotters will leave Victoria Park at 9.30pm to watch hundreds of bats emerging into the night. They will then return for a swim under the stars at Buckfastleigh Open Air Pool from 10.30pm to 11.30pm.

A spokesperson for the event said: ‘This very special night swim will give people the rare opportunity to see the mass emergence of hundreds of Greater Horsehoe Bat in Buckfastleigh before enjoying a magical night time swim in our heated pool.

‘We’ll meet at Victoria Park and will take you to experience these incredibly rare bats at close quarters at a secret location. This will involve a short walk across Buckfastleigh.

‘Experts will be on hand to tell people about these fantastic creatures, and then, shortly after sunset, they’ll be able to observe several hundred bats as they start their night forage.

‘It’s a short walk back to the pool for a magical night swim in our lovely warm pool with water heated to 27 degrees.

‘The pool area will be gently lit by twinkling candle lights and fairy lights and each swimmer will wear a coloured glow stick, creating a magical and fun event.’

After the swim there’ll be a range of free hot drinks, including a ‘secret recipe’ mulled cider and hot chocolate.

This is an event for adults and children over 12.
