BEACHES in Teignmouth and Shaldon are among those that will be flying the quality flag this summer.

Teignbridge Council is celebrating news that Teignmouth town beach, Ness Cove, Shaldon, Dawlish Warren and Coryton Cove have retained Environment Campaign's Seaside Awards. The awards recognise clean, well-managed resort and rural beaches that comply with the legal minimum, microbiological standards of water-quality according to European directives. Cllr Gordon Hook, Teignbridge environment and environmental health spokesman, said: 'It is fantastic news for the authority, and a great reward for all the staff who spend many hours ensuring facilities, service provision and conditions are first-class across the district's many beaches. The award scheme assesses beaches against a list of criteria that directly affect beach users, including cleanliness, safety provision, the maintenance of buildings and facilities, in addition to the control of dogs and general provision of information. Retaining these four awards means Teignbridge beaches have met the strict criteria necessary to be successful, and that we continue to deliver quality services for local people and visitors alike.' Cllr Tom Archer, Teignbridge spokesman for economy and tourism, said: 'We are delighted to retain these accolades for 2006 which reassure residents and visitors alike that we are committed to looking after our environment as part of our ongoing Clean, Green and Safe Campaign.'
