Eight-year-old Benjamin Wells has proved he's got soul by collecting more than 1,000 shoes for children in Malawi.

The Trinity School, Teignmouth, pupil canvassed his classmates, who pestered their parents, grandparents and neighbours as part of the BBC Blue Peter Appeal. Once the footwear began sprinting in, he gave up his break and lunchtimes to catalogue, bag and label the shoes, which will be recycled for cash for the children of Malawi.

His target was 100 pairs, but, exceeding all expectations, Benjamin ended up with more than 1,200 shoes, from flip-flops to wellies, and stilettos to walking boots.

No stranger to charity work, he collected old mobile phones and foreign coins to raise money for Childline last year.

Asked why he gets involved, he replied: 'I look on it as a challenge.'
