RESIDENTS and staff at a Newton Abbot care home have foot-slogged away to raise over £1,500 for charity.
Following on from the summer’s successful virtual cyclotron from Newton Abbot to Land’s End and back, Southlands Care Home, this time joined by the staff and residents, organised and took part in their very own Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Many of the staff team took part in the five kilometre run on September 26 set off by the residents, and then on September 28, Newton Abbot Mayor Richard Jenks cut the pink ribbon to set off the residents on their very own Race for Life in the grounds of Southlands.
Although the weather during the five-day long race was very changeable, the residents, walked or were wheeled, the five kilometres in the home’s grounds or corridors.
Carol Dyke, home manager, said: ‘This was such a huge achievement for the residents as most have mobility difficulties, but they were determined to show their support for one of our staff members who is undergoing treatment for cancer.
‘The staff and residents raised £1,533.75. They are amazing and we are so proud of them. Our thanks goes to all who sponsored the staff and residents and Cllr Richard Jenks for cutting the ribbon and his wonderful words of encouragement’.
The culmination of the week was a celebration with high tea and awarding of Race for Life medals for all.
