WASHING, grooming, titivating – there is no end to the work involved in getting animals ready for the Devon County Show. Claire Butcher, from Beckaford Farm, Manaton, was one of the first to bring her Murray Greys to the Westpoint showground on Wednesday, ready for judging yesterday. 'They have had several baths, not that you would believe it, and they will get another one now. I've been grooming them every day to try to get rid of their winter coats, but we're over 1,000ft up on Dartmoor and spring has been very cold this year.' She and husband, Chris, a solicitor in Exeter, also keep sheep, chickens, horses, dogs – and a llama 'The llama runs with the sheep. It keeps the foxes away. It's very good, they do exactly what she tells them,' said Mrs Butcher. The Butchers bought their 35-acre farm three years ago after moving from Chichester. Previously, Mrs Butcher was a nurse. 'It's my first experience of cattle. I've never done farming before. It's the same job as nursing, but dirtier,' she insisted. Last year – the first time that the Devon Country Show introduced a Murray Grey class – her heifer won a second and the bull won a third. Is she hoping to better her results this year? 'I've absolutely no idea what will happen,' she said.
