MOVES are afoot to reveal a little piece of Newton Abbot's history, which is buried behind ornamental planting in Asda's car park.

The grade-two listed medieval archway is a relic from the days when householders needed daily access to the River Lemon.

Now bricked up, the archway is visible only to the most keen-eyed shoppers.

Keith Stokes-Smith, Lord of the Manorial Borough of Newton Abbot and founder of the civic society, wants Asda to clear away the bushes and shrubs on the car park side of the ancient wall, so that the archway can once again be seen and enjoyed.
