Ashburton Futures, the town's climate action group, wants to set up a community energy project to save and generate renewable energy on a large scale.
It is holding a meeting at Ashburton Primary School on November 16, starting at at 7pm, to gauge interest and to discuss a way forward.
Ashburton Futures director Raj Patel said the aim is to explore the potential of commercial-scale projects for using solar photovoltaic panels, solar hot water and biomass heating.
Schools and colleges, businesses, the combined churches, town council, chamber of trade and other organisations have been invited. Nearer the time, posters will go up in the streets inviting residents to go along too.
Totnes Renewable Energy Society will share their experience of setting up an industrial and provident society, in which the public buy shares to fund renewable energy projects.
