If you are a person who eats a lot it may well be that you’ve been called ‘a gannet’ at some time.

This is not particularly because a gannet is a bird that eats a lot, though it probably gets through quite a number of herring and mackerel in a day due to its size, but because gannets can be seen in their hundreds plunging steeply into the sea in what looks like a feeding frenzy when a large shoal is located.
