SEVEN new cygnets are thought to have hatched in Dawlish.

This morning, the new Black Swan babies were clearly visible on the nesting site at Tuck’s Plot although still under the protective wing of their mum.

Exact numbers have yet to be confirmed but Dawlish waterfowl wardens reckon there are seven with one more egg remaining.

The babies are likely to take their first tentative swim on the water of the Brook later today.

Dad Bert is keeping a watch on the brood and ‘wants to help’ but is only being allowed on the nest when mum allows as she’s keeping them under her wing.

The new cygnets, who made their appearance yesterday morning, are a welcome boost for the Dawlish Black Swan population.

Live camera footage is following the family’s progress.

The parents have been dedicatedly sitting on the nest for many weeks now on the specially created site at Tuck’s Plot which was raised to protect the nest from extreme high water levels.

The town council has been asking for ideas for names for the cygnets.

Black swans were brought to Dawlish in the early 20th century, when the first pair were brought over from New Zealand.

They are the unofficial symbol of Dawlish and a major tourist attraction.
