MORE than 20 affordable homes could be built on derelict land in Teignmouth. Social Housing provider Tor Homes – which manages more than 5,000 homes in south Devon – has expressed interest in a 100 per cent affordable assortment of flats, starter homes and three-bedroom housing at the former Inverteign Infants School site off Mill Lane. It is likely to be a mix of rented and shared ownership properties. The Totnes-based association has held talks with Teignbridge Council planners and landowner Devon County Council. Though no planning application has been submitted, and details yet to be finalised, the news has been welcomed as a step in the right direction for the town. About 120 affordable homes are planned for the town in the district council's 10 year-development framework. The scheme includes five flats, nine two-bedroom houses, seven three-bedroom houses, and one three-bedroom house specifically designed for a family with a disabled person, with car parking spaces. A Tor Homes spokesman said that it was early days for the scheme. 'Tor Homes does not own the land and we are in preliminary discussions with the county council about the land. 'But I would stress that it is very early days and of course subject to planning permission,' she said. Teignbridge Council's portfolio holder for housing, Cllr Brian Berman, said: 'I am aware of discussions with a housing association and the county council and if the outcome is more affordable housing in Teignmouth then it is very good news.' Cllr David Cox, county and district councillor for Teignmouth, said: 'I am delighted at the prospect of 100 per cent affordable housing on the site. 'We are desperately in need of them. I am dealing with cases daily of families living in inadequate accommodation,' he said.
