A BOOK of Condolence for the Queen has opened at Newton Abbot Town Council’s HQ, Newton’s Place.

The book, which opened at 08:30am this morning, will be available for residents and visitors to record their condolences until the day after the funeral.

Members of the public are welcome to pop in to Newton’s Place and to record their condolences.

► A message from the Mayor


Mayor of Newton Abbot, Cllr Carol Bunday, said: ‘As Mayor of Newton Abbot, and on behalf of the Town Council and its residents, I am saddened to hear of the death of Her Royal Highness, The Queen.

‘She served this country over a number of decades with dignity, selflessness and huge energy.

‘Our thoughts and condolences are with all members of the Royal Family at this sad time.’


► Flying of flags


The Union Flag at St Leonards Clock Tower will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.

On Proclamation Day the flag will be raised to full mast and will remain there until 13:00 hours the following day when the flag will be returned to half-mast until the day following the funeral.


► Floral arrangements


For those wishing to place floral tribute, Newton Abbot Town Council ask you do so at Golden Lion Square and it is further requested that no cellophane be brought.

► Cancellation of Town Council events


Town Council events are cancelled for the next 12 days as a mark of respect to Her Majesty.

This means that the Town Criers Competition planned for tomorrow and the ‘Make and Create’ event will not take place.
