A Teignmouth couple are seeking to set up a social and self-help club for people with breathing difficulties.

Cyril and Ruby Merrett believe that there are many people who have to live with chronic conditions such as asthma and emphysema and who would benefit from meeting others for a chat and to share experiences.

Mrs Merrett suffers from emphysema, and used to keep the condition under control by attending physio sessions and a gym at the orthopaedic department of the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

But she also has a bad back and can no longer travel to Exeter, so she wants to find a replacement activity in Teignmouth.

'I feel that I'm stewing through inactivity, and find it very frustrating,' she said. 'The club would be held initially once a month, but it does depend upon the response.'

Mrs Merrett plans to invite doctors and physiotherapists to speak at meetings.

'It's lonely if you're on your own, but I'm lucky that I've got my husband,' she says. 'It can be very frightening if you think you're going to die. I have an oxygen tank if need be, but fortunately that's not often.'

Her husband, who underwent a serious operation himself last year, acts as her carer, cook and cleaner.

'Ruby is mentally willing but finds it physically difficult,' he says.

If you are interested in joining the club, please attend the first meeting at the Alice Cross Centre in Teignmouth, at 2.30pm next Thursday.
