A new BT ‘Street Hub’ could be installed in Newton Abbot as part of plans to improve digital connectivity and provide free public Wi-Fi.

BT Group PLC has submitted a planning application to Teignbridge Council, seeking permission to remove the existing phone box on Newfoundland Way and install a new Street Hub on Highweek Way, close to the junction with Market Street.

The application, reference 26/01539/FUL, says the proposed facility would provide a range of public benefits, including digital connectivity, economic development, public safety and community services.

The Street Hub would stand almost three metres tall, measuring 1.2 metres wide and 0.35 metres deep.

Its design includes a narrow base intended to minimise its footprint while maintaining access for wheelchair users.

According to the planning statement submitted with the application, the height of the structure has been designed to maximise the range of its Wi-Fi service without dominating the surrounding street.

BT says the Street Hub would provide free ultrafast Wi-Fi to residents, businesses and visitors, while also supporting a range of other urban services.

The company claims the technology could help ‘future proof’ the high street by making it smarter, safer and more sustainable, while contributing to the provision of modern digital infrastructure.

The application states that the proposed development would deliver social, economic and environmental benefits and is in line with the Government’s support for sustainable development and improved digital connectivity.

Teignbridge Council is expected to make a decision on the application by December 1.

Residents can view the full plans and submit comments through the council’s planning portal by searching for application 26/01539/FUL.
