IT was a late harvest for Teignmouth's homegrown oranges this year but worth the wait. Fifty-six oranges – weighing in at 29lbs, were harvested on Tuesday from Bitton House Orangery. The orangery is one of a very few in England that is still used to grow exotic plants and fruits. Volunteers have eagerly awaited the ripening of the fruits for more than two months. Last year's crop was harvested in November. Prize-winning cook Neelia Hutchins will be cooking up a storm with the produce for an open day at the Alice Cross Centre, Teignmouth, on February 26. Punters will be treated to pancakes and marmalade sauce.

harvest time: Neelia Hutchings, head cook at the Alice Cross Centre, and Malcolm Rae, picking oranges at the orangery.
