A CAR wash in Newton Abbot will disappear to make way for a new shop and flats, if district planners give the go-ahead.

Plans to replace Mile End Garage, along the Ashburton Road, with a convenience store and three self-contained apartments have been unveiled.

Paul Parker, the man behind the A38’s Star Wars AT-ST creation, has lodged his ambitions with Teignbridge Council’s planning team.

He told the Mid-Devon Advertiser that the current car wash and vehicle showroom will stay if his venture is turned down.

It’s hoped 10 full-time and 10 part-time employees will be taken on to cover the 7am until 11pm opening hours.

Planning officers are expected to come up with a decision by mid-July.
