SHOPPERS in Teignbridge will no longer have to travel nearly 100 miles to visit popular Swedish retailer IKEA.

Doors to Exeter’s new home furnishing outlet officially opened yesterday (May 10) with many loyal fans queuing outside hoping to be the first in the store.

Until today bargain hunters from the district had to embark on a gruelling trek to the closest IKEA store in Bristol.

Bosses at IKEA revealed the its 21st UK store in Newcourt Way, Exeter, has created 370 new jobs – with 85 per cent of the roles going to people in local area.

VIP guests and dignitaries including Lord Mayor Lesley Robson and Exeter City Council leader Peter Edwards joined IKEA officials for the grand opening this morning.

Tasty treats, a magician and brass band were just a few of the things keeping visitors entertained at the official launch.

Store manager Nick Earle said: ‘We are delighted to be opening our doors to the city of Exeter and the wider region today.

‘Myself and my team of talented co-workers are looking forward to welcoming the people of the south west to IKEA.

‘We want our customers to enjoy a fun day out and discover inspirational solutions to make their lives at home that bit more wonderful.’

The brand new store boats a range of facilities including a crèche, restaurant, bistro and a car park with more than 1,000 free spaces.
