SHOPPERS and passers-by are starting to catch a glimpse of the recently refurbished Market Walk shopping complex in the heart of Newton Abbot.

Workmen carrying out the £2m face lift have started to take down scaffolding, revealing a bright and colourful stretch of cladding.

A new glass roof has already been installed on top of the venue, replacing a set of bland concrete canopies.

The wave of work is part of a bigger £180m programme to completely regenerate the town centre.

Other ventures including knocking down the sets of kiosks in the market square and building a hotel on Halcyon Road car park.

Members of Teignbridge Council, which bought the shopping centre for £13m a few years ago, backed the refurbishment scheme last year.
