THINGS have worked out for fitness buffs in Newton Abbot as a new 24-hour gym opened its doors in Wolborough Street last week.

The new gym can be found at the former site of the Floor Save store in the town centre.

Plans for the site were approved by Teignbridge Council in December 2019, just a few months before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Mayor Mike Joyce was seen pumping iron on opening day as he officially welcomed the new business to the town.

Cllr Joyce seized on the opportunity to combine his mayoral duties with a quick workout.

He said: ‘I was very impressed with the layout, as soon as the doors opened there were already lots of people turning up.’

He added: ‘Having spoken to gym-users in the town, it’s clear that this is what Newton Abbot needs. The building being open 24/7 means shift workers can get exercise too.

‘This investment shows that people have confidence in Newton Abbot as a vibrant town that is moving forward.’

A spokesman for The Gym group said: ‘We are really breaking down barriers to fitness for the people of Newton Abbot with a cracking introductory membership offer of £9.99pcm with no joining fee for your first six months.

‘With a good number of people who have already signed up ahead of opening day, this is clearly a much-needed new service for the local community.

‘The new gym will have brand new kit which ranges from cardiovascular, free weights and functional training equipment.

The spokesman continued: ‘If that’s not enough, they will also offer a range of free gym classes that cater for all, loads of free parking for all members.’
