SEA cadets from Canonteign have been active during recent commemorations for the armed forces.

TS Canonteign Sea Cadets visited the former Royal Naval dockyard at Chatham and stayed onboard the decommissioned destroyer HMS Chatham.

A spokesman for the group said: ‘Eighteen cadets and nine staff enjoyed two full days of activities and training sessions with the dockyard’s sea cadet unit.

‘They visited the 19th century HMS Gannet, a crossover from the age of sail to the age of steam, and the cold war submarine HMS Ocelot, as well as a number of interactive exhibits including making rope in the 18th century rope house.

‘In a poignant moment of reflection a number of cadets undertook a personal silent homage at the national memorial to the 11,000 men who lost their lives during the Second World War on 142 Royal Navy Destroyers.’

On Saturday, the cadets attended RNAS Yeovilton for the Royal Navy air day, taking part in a number of activities and watching the air displays.

The spokesman added: ‘At the same time in Dawlish the unit’s standard was carried as part of the town’s Armed Forces Day parade by Able Cadet Will Stirland.

‘Will had the privilege of being asked to join the contingent of submariners who represented the crew of HMS Talent, a Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarine based at Devonport.

‘Despite a heavy downpour on route to the memorial service held on Dawlish Lawn, the event was deemed a great success.’
