AFTER a training exercise a planned get together for Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team (DSRT) and their supporters came to a sudden halt when they received an emergency callout.

Following a training exercise for water-based incidents, Neil Graham, chairman of Ashburton’s DSRT accepted a cheque for £500 from Sean Wilson, Ashburton’s 1201st Portreeve, and Karen Turner, Master Bailiff, at the Dartmoor Lodge Hotel.

The money will be used to purchase essential equipment used by the team. Funding help is needed to purchase the specialist equipment necessary to operate under difficult conditions.

For example, a stretcher costs almost £3,000 and a fully loaded kit bag in excess of £1,500. The £500 donated will cover the cost of a set of vacuum splints used to stabilise patients.

The Dartmoor Search and Rescue team is a charity with 60+ volunteers dedicated to assisting the emergency services with the search and rescue of the lost, missing, injured and vulnerable including children and those with dementia and mental health illnesses.  They bring a set of specialist skills and equipment which are essential in many emergency situations, particularly in rugged or remote rural situations.

Karen said: ‘The critical need for the team was brought home during our meeting when a call was received after having undertaken a two-hour training exercise. The DSRT is a critical emergency service in our area, a fact that was brought home to us. They shot off to spend the next five hours working with other emergency services in a remote location in the dark.’

Sean and Karen have been fundraising for several causes that help the local community. They have been supported by several of Ashburton’s foody businesses who are participating in the Portreeve’s Pick campaign.

The donation to the DSRT was raised from contributions to the Portreeve’s Pick campaign by the Dartmoor Lodge and match-funded from a donation by Grey Matter Ltd.

Karen explained: ‘When you choose the “Portreeve’s Pick” on the restaurant’s menu option, part of the proceeds are donated to support important local causes, not only will you be supporting a local business –you will be raising funds to help our community. It all adds up so a little goes a long way!’
