DARTMOUTH town mayor, Cllr Paul Darby, unveiled the Cancer Research Campaign's new logo on Monday at the charity's Duke Street shop.

The ceremony, which was heralded by town crier Peter Randall, was attended by many of the volunteers who run the shop, including Jackie Johnson, who at 81 years of age, is the oldest helper at Dartmouth.

Pictured with the mayor is C ancer Research Campaign shop manager Sam Denyer, assistant manager Jill Williams, Jackie Jackson, Jill Garlick, Pat Maddox, Viv Balkham, Flo Meadow, Babs Emsley and Virginia Stevens, plus town crier Peter Randall.

The campaign's new image has been devised to appeal to the next generation of fund-raisers and volunteers.

South west regional director, Claudia McVie, said: 'The success of our doctors and scientists in discovering new cancer drugs and treatments is remarkable.

'But that pioneering work is expensive and although we spent £55 million on research last year we have had to turn away £2 million of promising science because we haven't the money to fund it.

'Our logo is almost 30 years old, but it is just as relevant today. It shows a cluster of healthy cells with the rogue cancer cell out of control.'
