THE Dyrons Journal – known as the talking newspaper which benefits the visually impaired in the main area of Teignbridge – is busy raising funds to bring its equipment up to the digital age.

Founded in 1977, its volunteers still make the weekly recordings on 90-minute tape cassettes.

The results are not up to modern standards, with poor sound quality, and the equipment is rapidly becoming obsolete.

Potential new listeners can no longer be expected to have access to tape-based equipment.

Brian Smith, chairman, said the journal had served the visually impaired of the area faithfully for nearly 40 years.

‘Our listeners deserve a better product than the one we currently provide. I want them to have the best possible listening experience each week. New digital equipment will make this possible,’ he says.

Funds are needed to purchase equipment so that high quality recordings can be produced on USB memory sticks.
