FIREFIGHTERS were called to a car fire that turned out to be a car hitting a lamppost.

They have posted a picture on their Facebook page to record this adding: ‘A recent call out saw one appliance from Newton Abbot Fire station and another from Torquay Fire station mobilised to Warebarton roundabout to reports of a vehicle fire.

‘Upon arrival, it was clear that the incident was in fact, a single vehicle RTC (Road Traffic Collision), which saw one car leave the roadway and collide with a lamppost.

‘The call was initially passed onto us by our ambulance service colleagues who were first called to the scene.

‘Ambulance crews believed the car was on fire. This was due to the amount of gas that is given off as a result of the airbag charges detonating and then, in turn, inflating the airbags. ‘The fire crews in attendance made the vehicle safe by disconnecting the battery and ensuring all emergency services and recovery workers in the area were aware of all risks and hazards present.

‘Once safe, the incident and recovery operation were handed over to the police.’
