A councillor has called for urgent action to repair a leaking water pipe after a rush hour accident in icy conditions in Newton Abbot yesterday morning. Pedestrians and the occupants of a red BMW convertible escaped uninjured after the car left the road, crashed through a fence and ended up in the garden of Bakers Park Lodge. Traffic was disrupted while police carried out the clear up operation and contacted South West Water engineers in a bid to get a water leak, which comes from a private property, stopped. Residents in the area say the problem has been known since Christmas and has, allegedly, contributed to other accidents. Now ward member Cllr Gordon Hook has said unless urgent action is taken someone could die. 'I do not know if the water leak was directly responsible for Thursday morning's crash but I do know that it is completely unacceptable that the system has failed to put an end to a problem people have known about for months,' he said. 'I'm delighted to hear that no one was hurt in the latest incident but pedestrians and a motorcyclist have in the past and it's my fear that a fatality could happen there at any time when the water freezes. 'I'm calling on the police, South West Water, the landowner and all other interested parties to come together and get this sorted as a matter of real urgency.' No one at South West Water was available to comment.
