TRAFFIC came to a standstill on the A380 this afternoon after a car caught fire on the southbound carriageway.

Emergency services were soon on the scene but motorists were delayed along the route between Newton Abbot and Torquay for several hours.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control but the white vehicle was completely destroyed.

The road was blocked due to the fire which happened near the Edginswell turn off.

Congestion was reported along the length of the South Devon Highway to Penn Inn roundabout.

One lane remained blocked for most of the afternoon.

Traffic was diverted past the Sloop Inn towards Scotts Bridge junction.
