Margaret Nicholls, of Lyme Bay Road, Teignnmouth, writes: Spurred on by my free bus pass and efforts by the 'green' lobby to persuade me to leave my car at home, I caught the bus into town last Thursday morning. The bus route is supposed to be along Higher Brimley but the driver was unable to pass the cars parked on both sides of the road. He was, therefore, forced to reverse a considerable distance with only inches to spare on either side and take an alternative route. Passengers on the bus told me that on a recent occasion, when the bus driver was less experienced, they were held up for 50 minutes at the same spot. I was also told that it had been proposed to paint double yellow lines on one side of the road, but that had been blocked by 'an influential resident'. Surely it is the responsibility of the police and the council to ensure the road is clear for buses and, more importantly, for emergency vehicles? I really could not see how a fire engine could have reached any of the houses on that particular stretch of road that morning. If motorists haven't the brains or the self-discipline to work this out for themselves, then surely legislation in the form of double yellow lines must force them to do so.
