The organisers of the Newton Abbot Carnival have paid tribute to the many individuals and organisations who helped to make the popular event a success. Faced with competition from the World Cup and safety demands from the police, it reverted to its traditional afternoon slot. Although crowd numbers were slightly down as a result, good causes are still to benefit from more than £800 raised from collections and competitions. 'Yes numbers were lightly down but the actual carnival procession was well attended and attracted plenty of entries,' said Warren Douglas, of Newton Abbot Round Table. 'There were also a lot of very decent floats, which was good.' He thanked those who took part or attended and also those who supported it. 'Particular thanks must go to the Mid-Devon Advertiser, Newton Abbot Town Council and WBB Minerals,' he said 'Also needing a mention are the Andrew Hill Hair Salon, Newton Abbot Audi, Get Wicked, the Red Cross and St John Ambulance.' Mr Douglas said he would welcome feedback from the town on whether the carnival should be held during the afternoon or in the evening, as it had been for the last two years.
