People in towns across Teignbridge are preparing costumes, practicing dance routines and getting ready to dazzle in the streets as carnival season gets underway.

Volunteers have spent months preparing entertainment ranging from family games and competitions to live music and, of course, decorating floats and organising the logistics for a safe carnival parade.

Here are the details of when and where to enjoy carnivals across Teignbridge.

ASHBURTON - Saturday June 28 to Saturday July 5.

This year’s carnival week has an ‘under the sea’ theme.

Events planned throughout the week include a pensioners’ coffee morning, a bingo evening, a cricket match, quiz night, fun run and duck race.

The fun culminates on Saturday July 5 with a walking carnival procession starting at 6pm followed by a party in the park at the recreation ground.

CHUDLEIGH – Saturday July 19

The parade attracts floats and walking entries. It starts at 6pm and is followed by a party on Fore Street with live street entertainment.

Why have a procession on land when you can have a Water Carnival? Head to Shaldon for a slightly different take on carnival. During the day there are plenty of activities around the village before the water carnival procession on the River Teign in the late afternoon.

Carnival week includes bingo, pig-racing, a quiz, pub sports and a scarecrow competition.

And the highlight of the week, the Ipplepen Carnival Club ‘home’ parade, takes place on Saturday August 9. Look out for plenty of impressive floats and walking entries.
