People detained at Newton Abbot Police Station will be housed to a newly-refurbished cell block from Monday. In the last few months, the booking and charging facility, intoxilizer room, tape interview room, doctor's surgery area, holding room and four cells have been given a lick of paint and a £24,000 makeover. 'When the police station was revamped several years ago, the custody facilities weren't upgraded,' said Insp Andy Dower, of Newton Abbot Police. 'Now police officers won't have to go to take prisoners to Torquay police station as much. This will give them more time to be visible on our streets and it will be a more streamline system. 'A new cell build would cost £100,000, so for less than a quarter of that amount we have got all these facilities, including the four cells. I think it is value for money. 'The facilities are for prisoners who will be with us for a short term, who can be detained for up to six hours.' Insp Dower is thrilled that all facilities are up and running. 'I'm delighted and am pleased to have had the co-operation of Mr White, head of estate department, who has overseen the development. 'We'd also like to thank Newton Abbot Town Council for its support to get all the facilities reinstated. 'In public service, money can be difficult to come by, but this case was recognised and money was made available.'
