TONY ELLIOTT, of Newcross Park, Kingsteignton, of Devon Pensioners' Action Forum, writes:
In a week where Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has criticised the Labour Government heavily on its financial policies, here in Teignbridge our Liberal Democrat council, with their secure jobs and gold-plated pensions, have deemed fit to once again increase the cost of the council tax.
This hits hardest the people who can least afford such a rise – the OAPs who are not on benefit and families with low fixed incomes.
These are people who have worked hard throughout their lives. They have never relied on the state for income, and have saved part of their hard earnings to help survive the latter years.
They find now with interest rates virtually non-existent, that it will just encourage us to spend or give away our savings, thus extending the queues at the benefit offices.
This is totally uneconomic for the local councils and the government in power is my logical opinion.
The situation that now prevails has certainly not done any favours to Richard Younger-Ross, our Lib Dem MP, or our local and parish council officers, nor the government in power.
Future elections can not come soon enough for many of us, because it is certainly time for some big changes.
