In gale force conditions Ramblers got their first league win of the season by defeating Ilfracombe.

Playing into the face of the elements, Ramblers found themselves trailing by seven points as Ilfracombe stormed down the hill in for a quick try.

The prediction of many that Rams would be on the end of another hiding looked ominous, but the young Buckfastleigh side saw differently and responded magnificently.

Under the influential guidance of fly half and captain Steve Chapple, they took up the challenge and within ten minutes were back on level points, thanks to an opportunists try by Joel Riley, which Chapple converted.

For the next 20 minutes neither side could gain any advantage, although Ramblers went close to scoring when Ed Lamb got within inches of the try line only to be held up.

The game continued back and forth until half time with the scores remaining 7-7.

In the second half Ramblers had the advantage of playing downhill with the wind and rain on their backs, and an early Chapple penalty saw Rams take a 10-7 lead.

In the scrum, the hosts back row of brothers Kevin and Darren Greep, playing alongside the experienced Jan Boscence, were giving more the more experienced Ilfracombe pack plenty of problems.

A second penalty by Chapple saw Buckfastleigh take a six-point lead.

Ilfracombe tried to get themselves back in the match, but Ramblers' back line put in a tremendous defensive display.

Some great tackling from Robinson and Chapple kept the away team penned in their own half.

In the last ten minutes Ilfracombe turned on the pressure but to no avail.

Tomorrow, Ramblers are away to Newcross at Kingsteignton, kick-off 3pm.
