More than 40 charities and community groups in the district have received almost £12,000 between them after working with the Rotary Clubs of Teignmouth and Dawlish Water.

The money, which benefited pre-school groups, the Royal British Legion, Coastwatch, South West Ambulance and others, was raised by a raffle that altogether produced more than £30,000 for 115 Devon charities.

The top prize, a holiday for four on the Algarve, was won by Ermington woman Ruth Frampton who bought her ticket from Operation Imprezza, a Teignmouth charity supporting a school for Kenyan orphans.

The second prize, £200 in holiday vouchers, and the third prize, dinner for four at a top restaurant, went to entrants from Teignmouth and Dawlish respectively.

Tickets had been sold along the south coast from Teignmouth to Axminster. Six Rotary clubs paid the printing costs of the tickets which they distributed to community organisations to sell for their own funds.

The winning entries in the South East Devon Community Raffle, were drawn by their presidents at an event in Ottery St Mary attended by some of the beneficiaries.

Jan Portlock, of Riding for the Disabled, said: 'This is our lifeline. We have raised nearly enough to fund a horse for a whole year. We have to say a huge thank-you to Rotary.'

Mervyn Hayes, of the cancer charity Force, said: 'We have to raise £650,000 a year. It would be impossible to fund our work without the sort of contribution made on this occasion by Rotary.'

Brian Harris, president of Teignmouth Rotary, said: 'The community has been looking after itself with a little help from us. We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.'

Ray Moore, president of Dawlish Water, said: 'Much of the money wouldn't have been raised any other way.'

There were 39 other prizes valued at £900.
