LOCAL charities are set to benefit from their biggest showcase of the year at Newton Abbot’s Victorian Evening.

Good causes will be setting up stalls in the town centre for the free event which runs on Wednesday December 3 from 5pm to 8pm.

The much-loved attraction, a staple of the town’s Christmas celebrations for decades, has this year shifted away from Market Square where major remodelling continues apace and into nearby Bank Street.

Families, friends, and visitors from across south Devon are expected to turn up for the occasion which also features free Santa visits and live entertainment in Golden Lion Square including walkabout performers and music.

The Newton Abbot Museum stall will offer free hands-on activities and a chance to explore local history while warming dishes and seasonal delights will be on offer from street vendors in Courtenay Street.

Many of the town’s shops and businesses will stay open late and St Leonard’s Clock Tower, given a makeover as Santa’s living room, will be open for free cozy fireside selfies.

Natalie Hicks, Events Co-ordinator with Newton Abbot Town Council, said: ‘Charities are at the heart of Victorian Evening with a fantastic opportunity to showcase what it is they do for our community and to raise funds from the products and fun activities they’ll have on offer.

‘As always, we’re conscious that many families are finding the high cost of living quite a challenge which is why the event is free to attend, just soak up the atmosphere and free entertainments.

‘And if you can’t make it on Wednesday, don’t forget that we have our dog-friendly Christmas carol service on Saturday December 6, the brilliant Lantern Parade and late night shopping on Wednesday December 10, then the Mayor’s Carol Service on Wednesday December 17.’
