Burnham Nurseries, the orchid specialist at Forches Cross, Newton Abbot, has taken a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. The award-winning display of 500 unusual orchids took gold in the Floral Marquee category. Exotic vanda orchids of blue, pink and purple formed the centrepiece of the display, which marks the 49th year at Chelsea for Burnham Nurseries. 'We're very pleased,' said Ann Rittershausen, mother of Sarah who is director of the nurseries. 'We have taken gold before, but it doesn't happen every year.' Brian Rittershausen, Sarah's father and son of the nurseries' founder, said: 'Chelsea is the Olympic Games of the horticultural world. You can't get anything better than a gold at the Olympics and you can't get anything higher than a gold at the Chelsea Flower Show.' Their next big show will be at Hampton Court at the beginning of July.
