A HANDFUL of dedicated volunteers man St Leonard's Tower on Wednesday mornings throughout the summer to give visitors as well as locals an insight into the history of the town and tower. On Wednesday, it was reopened for the season by the deputy mayor of Newton Abbot, Cllr Anne Fry, who thanked the volunteers who have been opening the tower since 1995. Felicity Cole, curator of the town's museum, said the volunteers were passionate about the town and its history and when the sun shone they took out the stocks for visitors to sit in and take photographs. 'They have hundreds of visitors to the tower every year,' she said. It was at St Leonard's Tower that the first declaration was made in 1688 proclaiming William 111 Prince of Orange to be the new King of England – he had landed in Brixham after arriving from Holland. St Leonard's Tower will be open every Wednesday between 10.30am-1pm until August 31 and for Heritage Day on Saturday September 10. The volunteers also open it when there are special events in the town and for groups and school parties.
