Cllr David Cox, of Shaldon, writes:The Teignmouth Post team is to be congratulated on achieving a 28 per cent increase in sales of the Post – all the more spectacular when you consider the trend of declining sales in local newspapers nationally.Like many things in Teignmouth we can too easily take our local newspaper for granted. it surprised me to find the number of towns larger than Teignmouth who no longer have a proper local newspaper. Few town councils can boast of the regular attendance of a reporter at their meetings. Having the Teignmouth Post means many of us have a souvenir of the magical Muse weekend – an outside journalist could not have captured the spirit of the event as John Ware did. The Post is a vital ingredient to the community life, commerce and democracy of Teignmouth. the Teignmouth Post's success is Teignmouth's success. However, if I may be allowed one criticism; last week's headline, while statistically accurate, was somewhat misleading. Teignmouth Town Council's council tax precept increase is 7p a week (on an average band D property) that is 10.6 per cent – but the overall effect on the total council tax bill people have to pay is less than one per cent. Still I'm sure it will generate some lively debate on this letters page, which is I suppose no bad thing.
