PC Sarah Ross told Chudleigh Town Council this week that 15 cars were damaged in one night on March 14. 'It seems to be a one off,' she said, 'But no witnesses have come forward yet, despite many cars having their wing mirrors pulled off.' She told the council of other crimes in Chudleigh in March and April: one person drunk, one attempt to supply drugs, two assaults, two burglaries and one attempted burglary, one theft, stone throwing – and a town hall window was broken again. There had also been a burglaryr at Finlake. PC Ross said people needed to be reminded to close their windows when they left the house, as burglars took advantage of anything left open in good weather.

q There were some problems with the new traffic markings in Chudleigh – for example the extension of the zigzag lines at the bus stop made it difficult for the greengrocer to unload heavy vegetables. A sign indicating a 30-minute waiting zone on double yellow lines was also problematic. However, the Market Way parking was very clear and working well.

q Councillors were united in opposing the movement of the 30mph signs, saying the law was being applied inconsistently, and 30mph signs should be left where they have historically been sited.

q The town council has at last succeeded in having its meters read – and has been delighted to discover that instead of owing money to the power company it was the other way round - npower owes the council £1,000. qCouncillors praised the street cleaning services in Chudleigh. They are pleased that the time allocated to cleaning the town has now been increased to seven-and-a-half hours a week. They praised the actions of the cleaner on Monday morning, when he removed the body of a dead cat before children going to school could see it.

q Chudleigh's website is linked to a nesting blue tit on Dartmoor, and this is proving popular. The bird has 10 eggs.

q The town council is determined townspeople will know what it's up to. It has bought 11 new noticeboards that will be erected round the town to display town council notices and minutes of meetings. There will also be a newsletter written by Philip Vogel, the town clerk.

qCouncillors decided that the old rule banning dogs from the cemetery was no longer relevant. Well behaved dogs will in future be welcomed at Chudleigh Cemetery and the notice will be amended.

q The council welcomed the suggestion that wild flower seeds – especially cowslips – should be scattered round the footpaths of Chudleigh.

q Millstream Meadow and Culver Green should be completed by Cavana by the first week of June. The town council will be taking out a licence to run the recreation areas there. Insurance will cost £500 for each of the two sites and and additional £500 for the skate park. There will be an extraordinary general council meeting on May 19 to deal with this, and a meeting on May 22 during which a ribbon will be cut at Culver Green to formalise the handover. Councillors will then walk on to Millstream Meadow, accompanied by two skateboarding youngsters. q Councillors praised the youth group for its responsible attitude towards the skate park. Young people have asked for several optional extras in the park, and are organising sponsored events to pay for the extra insurance needed for these items.

q Councillors were pleased that the parking problems seem to been solved since the sports centre began opening its gates on football nights.

q Concern was expressed by several councillors about drainage water going into the leat. They agreed to raise the problem with Cavanna and Teignbridge Council.
