Teignmouth Town Council has apologised after all the town’s public toilets remained closed all day on Sunday (September 27).

Residents took to social media to criticise the council after being unable to access a public loo.

One person complained that there was “nowhere for visitors and locals to go near the beach - would have to go to nearby cafes etc”.

They added that disabled people, who used to be able to access a public loo at The Den with a universal ‘Radar’ key, were also stuck without toilet facilities, because the special cubicles for disabled users are now inside the main toilet block.

They said: “Disgusting way to treat tax paying locals and not exactly welcoming to visitors who want a day at the beach!”

On Tuesday (September 29) the town council also took to Facebook, to apologise for the ‘delayed opening of the town’s public toilets on Sunday, September 27’.

A statement said: “Unfortunately due to contractor staffing issues the toilets were not opened until 5pm that day.

“We recognise that this was unacceptable, particularly for residents, visitors and local businesses who rely on these facilities being available throughout the day.

“The council takes the availability and accessibility of public toilet facilities seriously and is reviewing what happened to ensure that this issue does not happen again

“Thank you for everyone who brought this to our attention, and we apologise to those who were affected.”
