THE future of 17 public toilets in Teignbridge will lie in the laps of town and parish councils and community organisations.

Teignbridge Council Executive on Tuesday, agreed to have a two-month consultation with a view to disposing of the 17 and withdrawing the manning of the Market toilet in Newton Abbot.

There are 39 public conveniences in the district and off-loading nearly half of them would represent a saving of £152,000 once disposal costs are met.

Chief executive Nicola Bulbeck said if all 17 were disposed of or transferred it would represent a saving of £1.22 per head of population, equivalent to £3.50 on the Band D council tax.
