Mrs E Brooker, of Torquay Road, Newton Abbot, writes:
When Devon County Council awarded the contract to run the Brunel Road recycling centre to SITA, they assured the townspeople that the resale area would be as good as, if not better than the previous contractors.
It was reported in this paper that a facebook page had been set up by concerned residents and that they were worrying over nothing by the change in contractor!
Having given SITA several months to settle in, I am sad to report that everyone's worst fears were founded. The resale area is a shambles with very little in the way of decent items available for sale. Staff have confirmed that most of the goods are sold in bulk to traders.
Many people, myself included, have sent items to the recycling centre and marked them so they can be easily identified. The majority of these items have turned up at a certain second hand goods business in Exeter.
SITA are well aware of people's concerns but to date have failed to address this problem.
The recycling centre has always been a godsend to low income families in the area and to take this valuable community resource away is irresponsible and unacceptable.
I sincerely hope that Devon County Council will put people before profit and ensure that the town gets its fully stocked resale area backTHIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
