A DRIVER has denied causing an accident in which a pedestrian was killed as they walked home from Newton Abbot in the early hours.

Stephen Hickinbottom, aged 52, of Danvers Road, Torquay, denied causing death by careless driving and dangerous driving when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

Both charges relate to events on the night of July 26, 2015, when chip shop owner Gareth Toms, aged 30, died after an accident on the A380 at Torquay Road, Newton Abbot.

The second charge of dangerous driving alleges he carried on driving with his Chrysler Delta in a damaged condition after the accident.

Judge Graham Cottle adjourned the case for trial later in the year and released Hickinbottom on bail.
