Anyone with a love of the traditional county shows cannot fail to enjoy the Royal Cornwall. It gives one a reassuring feel that farming is still appreciated in this country, with many farmers attending for all three days. The weather was wonderful and record crowds supported the show. A personal highlight for me was seeing The Devil's Horsemen and the Lloyds Bank black stallion. The riding skills of the Cossack team and the response from the horses is breathtaking and, for me, I found it so magnificent I had tears. I even noticed my daughter wiping away a tear. My young grandson was screaming with delight. Among the cattle, I found Mighty Mouse, a 12-year-old Dexter, owned by Bernard Stamp, from the Shilford herd, who came out of retirement for one show only. He was top UK show bull in 1999, and he proved he could still cut the mustard, being judged Reserve Male Champion. One satisfying result came for owner Rosie Christopher, from Ashburton, with 15.2hh Jasmine Touch Tizzy, who came third in the Intermediate Show Hunter class. Jasmine was bred by Rosie and was ridden at the show by 17-year-old Emma Wells. This show really is a date for your diary.
