WORKMEN have stumbled across a mystery culvert in the heart of old Teignmouth.

What is believed to be an historic waterway of some sort was uncovered while builders were carrying out strengthening works at the rear of the former Woolworths store in George Street.

It could be up to 200 years old, and historians and various agencies are now trying to try and identify exactly what the structure was used for.

Historian and Post columnist Viv Wilson described it as 'a very exciting find'.

She said:?'It could be part of the Brimley Brook diversion that was carried out when the marshy area around there was drained. Nobody is sure yet, and more detective work is needed.
