A DAWLISH mother has called for a 'dangerous' tree at Newhay to be cut down after two children have been injured within a week after falling from its branches Chrissie Marks, of Westcliff Road, said that several children have hurt themselves while swinging over a steep drop from ropes attached to the branches. 'It is literally a sharp drop into the stream. We need the tree down before someone cracks their head open,' she said. On Wednesday her nephew, Jake Parsons, 11, was rushed to Torbay Hospital with broken wrists, cuts, bruises and shock after he slipped and fell about 20ft down an embankment. Devon air ambulance was called before the extent of his injuries was known but was diverted at the last minute. Jake had to be strapped in a bag and hauled back up the steep slope by fire and ambulance crew, before being taken to hospital. A spokesman for SW Ambulance Service confirmed that this was the second similar incident within a week. The first involved a young girl. 'We would urge parents to be especially vigilant in ensuring that their children aren't partaking in any potentially dangerous activities during the holiday season,' she said. The accident was an unpleasant end to Jake's holiday. He and his family, who live in Dubai, had been staying with his aunt's family. The land where the tree stands belongs to the Diocesan Church Board and is rented by Teignbridge Council. Council spokesman Michelle Kenney said that the council's tree expert had inspected the tree and removed the rope swings but that the tree was in a good condition and the council had no plans to cut it down. 'There are plenty of safe play areas in Dawlish and we would recommend that local children and visitors use those areas,' she said.
