TRIBUTES have been paid to former Newton Abbot mayor and long-serving councillor David Howe, who was passed away at the age of 79.

Newton Abbot Town Council announced the sad news following Mr Howe’s death on Sunday, October 25, remembering his significant contribution to public life in the town over almost three decades.

Born in May, 1947, Mr Howe was first elected to the town council in May 1996 and remained in office until the May 2023 elections, when he decided not to stand for re-election.

During his time as a councillor, he served as mayor for 2009 and 2010, playing an active role across numerous town council committees.

And his commitment extended beyond the council, representing Newton Abbot on several outside organisations.

In September 2009, he visited Besigheim - Newton Abbot’s twin town - to attend its wine festival on behalf of Newton Abbot Town Council.

Fellow town councillor Mike Joyce paid tribute to Mr Howe, recalling his sense of humour, wealth of experience and willingness to support his fellow councillors.

Having joined the council in 2016, Cllr Joyce said he soon discovered Mr Howe’s background as a submariner. He fondly remembers that whenever asked about his military service, Mr Howe would reply: ‘I cannot comment, as I signed the Official Secrets Act’.

The response never failed to raise a smile, Cllr Joyce said.

Tributes have also been shared by the Wolborough Inn, where Mr Howe was a regular.

The pub described him as a ‘lovely man with some great memories in and around Newton Abbot’, sending its thoughts to his family and loved ones.

The tribute concluded: May you rest in peace, Dave’.

Former town and district councillor Mike Hocking also paid tribute to his former colleague, saying: ‘Our town has lost another character.

‘A great councillor who was always watching the purse strings on behalf of the residents’.
