David Stewart-Watson, a 15-year-old fencer from Moretonhampstead, became the national champion at the weekend.
Competing in the cadet (under 17) epee championships in Sheffield, he beat Matthew Henderson of Newcastle 15-12 in the final.
David, who is in Year 11 at South Dartmoor School, started to fence when he was aged eight at the Newton Abbot club.
Initially joining their Friday evening session at Dyrons he now trains four times a week.
David had previously won the under-14s British Youth championships in 2006In his group, David won all his fights, the closest being 4-2 to be ranked number one.
He progressed easily to the last 16 when he had a close fight, finally pulling away with 90 seconds.
In the quarter-final he easily beat Mark Roper of Arnold School.
The semi-final saw David up against James Allen of London Thames, who had beaten him in the final of the under-16s British youth championship in February.
David was able to exact revenge, outwitting Allen to win 15-10.
The final, in front of a crowd of 200, saw David dominate Henderson from the first point. He continually drew Henderson into the attack, and with a series of quick reposts and counter-attacks won 15-12.
David is currently fifth in Great Britain cadet rankings and is looking forward to two internationals in Germany and Austria in November and December.
David is sponsored by SportsAid and Asda. This is part of a scheme to support 730 young sportsmen and women.
As part of his programme he will be giving a display of fencing tomorrow at Asda in Newton Abbot at 11am.
