THE Mayor of Dawlish, Cllr Val Mawhood, will plant an English oak tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy project for the Platinum Jubilee tomorrow, Friday, March 11.

The tree will be planted at the Buntings (nearest location is Clover Drive – EX7 0FJ) as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.

Greenbelt have provided the ground and are assisting in the planting of the tree. A special plaque will be put in place with the tree.

The date of Friday, March 11, has been chosen as it has been specially designated by the National Association of Civic Officers as Tree Planting Day.

The National Association of Civic Officers is preparing a bound book that will include (alphabetically) the names of all councils taking part on March 11, with the name of the person planting the tree alongside the office they hold, the type of tree planted and a few words saying where it was planted.

The book will then be sent to The Queen, probably for the Platinum Jubilee weekend in June. Dawlish Town Council will be included in the book.

All are welcome to come along on Friday at 10.50am for 11am at the Buntings. Please wear suitable footwear as it may be muddy.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.
