REG WILLS, of Exeter Road, Newton Abbot, writes:

Mr Younger-Ross refuses to quit despite criticism from a parliamentary committee that he accepted £8,000 which should have gone into the public purse.

The acceptance of £8,000 for personal use which rightly belonged to the public purse is certainly in the view of many a resigning matter.

Mr Younger-Ross thinks otherwise and apparently is supported in that view by Wally Protheroe, who is the chairman of Teignbridge Liberal Democrats. The leader of Teignbridge Council, Alan Connett, is also supportive.

Members of the Liberal Democrat Party must be wondering what sort of party they have joined in that the use of public money privately can be tolerated, especially when used by the Member of Parliament.

To support such action is deplorable and I have never known such a low standard of professionalism in the 45 years that I served on various councils.

My 45 years includes chairmanship of Newton Abbot Urban District council in l969 and being mayor of Newton Abbot Town Council in 2005. Most of these years were without any remuneration; councillors in the main just wanted to serve the community and did so without remuneration.

It is a time for a change to more dedicated representatives and leave behind the what's-in-it-for-me type we have seen recently.

Incidentally, Mr Younger-Ross stated that if people are unhappy about the situation they will have the opportunity to vent their disappointment at the ballot box.

Now is your chance, with a General Election only a few weeks away, to show your disdain at such arrogance.THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
