TEIGNBRIDGE Council's plan to turn derelict toilets by the Manor House, Dawlish, into a home has provoked mixed reactions.

The toilets have been derelict for at least three years and are becoming more and more unpleasant to look at.

Cllr Wally Protheroe said: 'One of the reasons why the toilet closed was so that the money saved on them could be spent elsewhere on things that really need to be regenerated, such as the toilets on the Lawn.

'This year, £165,000 will be spent on the toilets there.'

Cllr Protheroe hoped that profits from sale of the toilets would be used to support existing facilities.

He said: 'The money that will be made by Teignbridge will be used to upgrade other toilets, car parks and play areas. It will not be spent on housing.

'We need to spend money on these things and that is being done.'

Cllr John Clatworthy thought that the toilets should be demolished and returned to parkland.

'They should be demolished and returned to incorporate the formal Manor Gardens.

'Teignbridge want to raise money for other toilets, but this is not the right way to do this.'

Brian Heath, chairman of the Dawlish Carnival Committee, said: 'If they are going to knock them down and build a house, I hope that every single penny they make from this will be spent in this town.'

No one at Teignbridge Council was available for comment at the time of going to press.
