A CINEMA is one of the top priorities that young people would like to see incorporated into a new community hub in Bovey Tracey.

Cllr Eoghan Kelly, who is heading a community hub steering group, told Monday’s town council recreation, parks and property committee that the main theme from the feedback in the consultation with 20-year-olds was their desire for a cinema.

The council is proposing to have a new community building on the site of the Grade 11 listed Old Thatched Inn, Station Road, which was destroyed by fire in July 2008.

Devon Communities Together working with the town council, was commissioned to help develop the business plan, the funding and consultation strategies.

Now the concentration is on formulating a capital investment plan, while soon to be undertaken is a broader community consultation.

Cllr Kelly said they were trying to have a permanent display of the plans in the library, where people could talk to councillors and give their ideas.

‘By the end of the summer we could be looking at the possible appointment of an architect. The building needs to be functional,’ he emphasised.

Also the council will need to know what capital investment will be required from its budget.

The council has leased the town hall as a whisky distillery and is to remain there until eventually moving into the community hub.

Original plans were to have a council chamber, meeting rooms for community groups, and to incorporate public toilets and the tourist information centre.
